The Rescue Basket Teambuilding course is one of the newest additions to Jumonville’s extensive Challenge Ropes Course. It utilizes a “rescue basket” that would be used to transfer an injured person from a cave, rock climbing area, or other rough terrain where a vehicle would not be able to be used. The rescue basket is used to transfer a “patient” through an extensive on the ground set of initiatives that are built out of used utility (telephone) poles. Younger campers don’t transfer another camper. They may transfer a stuffed animal or some other object. Older campers will actually transfer another team mate.

This challenge course is ideal for exploring team building principles with almost any population. Participants will be able to hone team building skills such as listening, leadership, planning and communication while embarking on an adventurous and challenging mission. Although simple looking in design, the action and learnings that occur represent some of the most dynamic group initiatives in the adventure education field.

The post Rescue Basket Teambuilding Course first appeared on Jumonville Camp & Retreat Center.

There are climbing walls on all four walls with varying angles and levels of difficulty. These “bouldering” walls are used to teach the basics of rock climbing and can easily handle groups of 30 or more (although individual groups are normally between 15-18 participants). Helmets, harnesses and ropes are not needed as the participants pair up with another participant who serves as a “spotter.” In addition to the “bouldering” activities, the room is used for “off the wall” activities (lead up activities to help stretch out a group and get the ready to start climbing) as well as portable initiatives that help a group with team-building and problem solving.

The post Adventure Center Bouldering Room first appeared on Jumonville Camp & Retreat Center.

There are two large 10″ square garage doors that can be rolled up to provide some great ventilation in the warmer months. Twenty-five different ropes are currently set up for climbing with varying angles and levels of difficulty for what is referred to as “top rope” climbing. Each rope has multiple climbs available and climbs are color coded by the color of the holds. Endless variations are available to provide for beginners to hard core gym rats. In addition to the “top rope” climbing activities, there is also a rappelling station where participants can learn to rappel or improve their rappelling techniques. Take your adventure to new heights by trying your hand (and feet) in our newest adventure activity.

The post Adventure Center Back Room first appeared on Jumonville Camp & Retreat Center.

Belaying refers to a variety of techniques climbers use to exert friction on a climbing rope so that a falling climber does not fall very far. A climbing partner typically takes up the slack in the rope while the climber continues to climb. The partner then applies friction at the other end of the rope to stop the climber and then removes the friction from the rope whenever the climber needs more rope to continue climbing.

Our trained adventure staff teach classes in proper belay techniques to our older campers or other staff who want to become certified belayers. Taking the class does not guarantee certification. Campers or staff must pass the belay certification test and then they are added into the database and receive a wrist band indicating that they are belay certified.

Special arrangements need to be made with the Jumonville office staff if you want to include this activity as part of your group’s experience. The goal of utilizing the individual elements is similar to the high elements. It is more for individual challenge than that of group teambuilding but there is not the additional factor of being further off the ground and therefore no extra belay equipment is needed. The participants belay or “spot” for each other. The individual elements are often used in conjunction with the teambuilding elements and may be used to help the participants warm-up. They are also ideal for younger participants with lots of extra energy to burn.

The post Individual Elements Challenge Course first appeared on Jumonville Camp & Retreat Center.

Our original Ben Cromer Adventure Center was established in 1993 in one of our former outdoor classrooms. It was destroyed by an early morning fire in April of 2002. A new and much larger Adventure Center was built near our bouldering wall in 2003. The elements and program are geared toward planned success to build inner confidence, trust, and team building through shared struggle, communication and accomplishment. The initiatives are physically engaging, intellectually challenging, spiritually stimulating, and tailored to the abilities of participants. Physical ability is far less important than tenacity in the cooperative search for solutions and the ability to think creatively. There are three areas in the new adventure center. There is a front welcome center area, a middle bouldering area, and a taller back room for top roped climbing and rappelling.

The post Adventure Center first appeared on Jumonville Camp & Retreat Center.
